These are rules that must be followed on the forums.
Points of interest off:
Good idea
Writing well - adhering to established practices of spelling, grammar, punctuation, etc. Links to more spell-checking sites like this guy
would be good. Maybe someone can find a basic writing style primer, the
MLA Rules for Writers is way more specific than I mean. I mean tips
like "try not to overuse adverbs," "don't repeat the same word over and
over when synonyms are available," how to avoid run-ons, and stuff that
prevents awkward phrasing. A basic grammar primer might be of benefit,
as well. If someone wants to know that they shouldn't end a sentence
with a preposition, I want a website that they can find out at.
Contributing - be it original
fancontent or just plain insight, someone who keeps a conversation
interesting or entertaining is a welcome addition. Wit and the like
aren't required in every last post; we're happy to have people here at
all. But it lets everyone have a better time, and a history of it might
just save you from a ban if you briefly become involved in any of the
behaviors below.
Bad idea
Stupid anime emoticons or just plain old overusing emoticons at all - they're for jerks.
Ellipses - see above.
"Random" humor - when it falls
short of absurd, it lands squarely in the realm of obnoxious. Sporks,
badgers, and doom will never be funny again (thanks alot, Invader Zim).
Raising dead threads - if a
thread is more than a few weeks old, ONLY REPLY TO IT IF YOU HAVE A
MAJOR, IMPORTANT CONTRIBUTION. One epic enough to be worthy of its own
thread, but you don't want to start one. Don't do it just to make a
joke, don't do it to AGREE WITH SOMETHING ALREADY IN THE THREAD or say
"lol!!1" and not add anything.
Chatspeak - this is not New Zealand.
Double-posting - is an eyesore.
It's only allowed if two of the following 3 conditions are met: (1)
it's been a matter of at least a day since the previous post; (2) the
new reply is very, totally distinct from the old one, and is not even
related to the same idea; or (3) you really really want to leave the
old post, which was a rare gem, as-is for posterity.
Lousy English - if you show little improvement even after using the resources provided in Writing well,
or refuse to try, you're gone. Exceptions are almost entirely limited
to non-native English speakers. They do NOT include people who are too
stupid to relearn the material or too annoying to put it into practice.
They certainly don't include users too young to speak properly, as
under-13 means b&.
Pretty much anything from the greatest failures archive - link here.
Just plain old being annoying or a dick
- no trolls, no jerks, nobody who says something offensive and means it
(not like me, I don't mean it. I mean more along the lines of dirty
rednecked pigfucking inbred bumpkins who say bad things about the
blacks). Offensive can be extended to mean aesthetically abrasive;
anything annoying not covered above falls here. I would appreciate you
guys coming up with some examples.
Rules come from the Slightly Damned webcomic and will apply here.
